Shobhana Bhartia is the chairperson and editorial director of Hindustan Times Group. It is one of the India’s best newspaper and media houses. It is known for bestEnglish daily Hindustan Times, a Hindi newspaper and business paper Mint. Initially it was started by her father Krishna Kumar Birlawho was an Indian industrialist of the Birla family. He died at the age of 90 by age-related ailments and pneumonia. Hence, the group is inherited to his daughter.

Shobana is also the Pro Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, BITS Pilani and the chairperson of Endeavor India. In her political career she served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha. She holds ₹400 Crore in public equity launch of the HT Media group.Under her leadership, the HT Media’s revenues have profitably grown above industry levels. She has made the market capitalizationgrow till 81%. She has been with the company over almost two decades. She is always known for her demonstrated leadership.
The HT group operates four FM radio stations and multiple websites including job portal Shine.com and cinema portal Desimartini.com.The company also tied up with Virgin Asia to launch FM radio channels. HT Media has a tutoring arm known as Studymate. It has expanded into coaching for the entrance exams for India’s elite engineering schools. She also launched the MintAsia, which is the business weeklyin Singapore. She also bought Webitude which is a social and digital media outfit.


Personal life
Shobana is known for one of the heirs of the Birla. She is the grand-daughter of GD Birla. She was brought up in Kolkata and completed her schooling in Loreto House. She pursued graduation from Calcutta University. She married Shyam Sunder Bhartia who is the Chairman ofpharmaceutical firm Jubilant Life Science Ltd.Their son Shamit Bhartia is the Director of the HT Media group. Shamit married the daughter of the Chennai based industrialist. Shobana is the first woman chief executive of a national newspaper. She had made the Hindustan Times a bright Indian newspaper circulated in different parts of the country.

She is known as the lady of achievements. She was named one of Forbes Asia’s 50 Women in the Mix. Shobana has interest in developing her political career. For this she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. She was held for introducing The Child Marriage and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill in the year 2006.

In 1992, she was conferred with National Press India Award.
In 1996, she received the Global Leader of Tomorrow award from the World Economic Forum.


In 2001, she was awarded he Outstanding Business Woman of the Yearby PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
In 2007, she won the Business Woman award and the Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence in media.
In 2013, she received the Delhi Women of the Decade Achievers Award from the ASSOCHAM Ladies League for excellence in Nation Building through Media & Leadership.
She was also one the nominees of Padma Shri award.
