Chanda Kochhar is the chief executive officer and the managing director of the ICICI Bank.She heads the Corporate Centre of ICICI Bank. It is the India’s second largest private bank.She was listed in Most Powerful Women in Business which was figured in Fortune’s list and in Most Powerful Women – Hall of Fame. She even featured in the 50 Most Influential People in Global Finance List of Bloomberg Markets.She is an inspiration to women all over the world.
Early Life
Chanda was born on 17th November 1961 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She completed her schooling from St. Angela Sophia School in Jaipur. She completed her Bachelor of Arts from Jai Hind College in Mumbai. She pursued Cost Accountancy ICWAI. She completed her Master’s from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai. She was a gold medalist for Excellence in Management Studies as well as the J. N. Bose Gold Medal in Cost Accountancy.
She started her career with ICICI as a management trainee. She took Project Appraisal and Monitoring and projects in various industries like Textile, Paper and Cement. Years later she was sent to the core team in the bank. In 1994, she became the Assistant General Manager and Deputy General Manager in 1996. She was promoted as a general manager for the Major Client Group for which it used to handle 200 clients. She was in the Strategy and E-commerce divisions in the bank. Under her leadership Retail business was started and emerged the largest retail finance in India. In the year 2001, she took over as Executive Director, heading the in ICICI Bank. From the year 2006, she managed the International and Corporate businesses. She acted as the chief financial officer (CFO), Joint managing director (JMD) and the official spokesperson.
Chanda was a director of different ICICI group companies. She is the chairperson of ICICI Bank Eurasia Ltd. Liability Company and ICICI Investment Management Company Ltd. Kochhar is the Vice-Chairperson of ICICI Bank UK PLC and ICICI Bank Canada. She is a director in ICICI International Ltd. and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd. she was recognized for her role in shaping the retail banking sector in India and well known for her contributions to various forums in India and globally. She succeeded K. V. Kamath who was CEO of the bank. She was married to Deepak Kochhar who was the wind energy entrepreneur and formallyher business school mate. The couple has two children Arjun and daughter Aarti.
Awards
In 2004, she was awarded the Retail Banker of the Yearby the Asian Banker for the Asia-Pacific region.
In 2005, she won the Business Woman of the Year by The Economic Times.
In 2006, she was awarded the Rising Star Award for Global Awardsby Retail Banker International.
In 2010, she was honored with Padma Bhushan Award by the government of Indiafor her services to banking sector.
In 2011, she was awarded the ABLF Woman of Power Award at the Asian Business Leadership Forum Awards.
In 2014, she received the ASSOCHAM Ladies League Mumbai Women of the Decade Achievers Award and was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws from Carleton University, Canada in recognition of her pioneering work in the financial sector.
